Irampanel (BIIR 561) is a combined antagonist of AMPA receptors (AMPAR) and voltage-dependent sodium channels.
Irampanel (BIIR 561) noncompetitively inhibits AMPA receptor-mediated membrane currents in cultured cortical neurons with IC50 of 8.5 uM, reduces sodium currents in voltage-clamped cortical neurons with IC50 of 5.2 uM and inhibits the veratridine-induced release of glutamate from rat brain slices with IC50 of 2.3 uM.
Irampanel (BIIR 561) shows anticonvulsive and neuroprotective properties in mice.
