Honokiol (NSC 293100) is a natural biphenolic compound derived from the bark of magnolia trees, directly binds to SIRT3 and is an effective activator of deacetylase SIRT3, shows anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, anti-tumour and neuroprotective properties.
Honokiol activates SIRT3 and deacetylates mitochondrial proteins.
Honokiol blocks hypertrophic response of cardiomyocytes in vitro.
Honokiol protects mice from developing cardiac hypertrophy, blocks cardiac hypertrophy of wild-type, but not SIRT3-KO mice.
Honokiol attenuates cardiac fibroblasts proliferation and differentiation into myofibroblasts, reduces ROS production and prevents cardiomyocyte death.
Honokiol activates PGC1α responsive SIRT3 gene promoter leading to increased levels of SIRT3.
