Phenformin (Phenethylbiguanide) is an orally active biguanide hypoglycemic agent that inhibits mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I, leading to an increased AMP/ATP ratio, activation of AMPK, and subsequent inhibition of the mTOR pathway, thereby suppressing cell proliferation, inducing apoptosis and autophagy.
