Biological Activity

NCBP1 is a plant-derived, 11 amino acid, noncanonical antibacterial peptide with dual activity against multidrug-resistant bacterial and fungal pathogens, by targeting phosphatidylglycerol and cardiolipin in bacterial membrane, resulting in membrane damage and dysfunction.
NCBP1 showed antibacterial activity (MIC, 16-64 uM) against a panel of Staphylococcus spp. strains from animals, including methicillin-resistant S. aureus, S. chromogenes, S. equorum, S. intermedius, S. lentus, S. simulans, and S. squirrel.
NCBP1 displayed bactericidal activity by targeting bacterial membrane.
NCBP1 exhibits a high binding affinity to phosphatidylglycerol (PG) with SPR Kd of 5.34 uM, as well as and cardiolipin (CL), but no binding for phosphatidylethanolamine (PE).
NCBP1 may trigger membrane disruption, leading to the loss of membrane potential, ATP leakage, and ROS accumulation.
NCBP1 protected mice from S. cohnii infection, enhances resistance to fungal diseases in maize plants.
